Famous Waterfalls of Chhattisgarh

Chitrakoot Waterfall

Chitrakoot waterfall on Indravati river is known as one of the broadest waterfall in India. It is famous as the Niagara Falls of India for the horse shoe shaped rim. Falling across the rocks of Vindhya mountains from a height of 29 meters, the waterfall gives best view at their best when they are full during the monsoons. The entire view of the waterfall can be best enjoyed by taking a boat ride below the waterfall. Chitrakot is 48 kms from Jadgalpur; tourists may hire a taxi at Jagdalpur to reach Chitrakoot. Buses also shuttle ‘slowly’ between the two towns, in typical village style halting at various stops. This bus-ride gives you a peek into the villages close by and takes about two hours.

Teerathgarh and KangerDhara Waterfall

The mystical Teerathgarh white falls on Mugabahar River are block type falls, where water plunges over a series of boulders, splashing from 300 feet height. Tourists are left spellbound watching rainbows formed at the falls as water turns milky and frothy while taking that high drop in steps, splashing from rocks. This place is also famous for an ancient temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.


KangerDhara waterfalls are also close to Tirathgarh waterfalls. Water gushes through rocks in such a great speed that it is not safe for tourists to get down into the pool to swim and enjoy the falls. These are best enjoyed by looking at them from a boulder close, but at a safe distance from the falls.
Both these waterfalls are located at Kanger Valley National Park that houses deers, boars, lions, sloths, tigers, leopards, turtles, crocodiles and many more birds and animals amidst thick deciduous forests of mostly Sal, Teak and Bamboo trees. Tourists can also walk into natural caves Kailash, Dandak and Kutumsar, located in the park. Kanger ghati/valley National park is located at about 40 kms from Jagdalpur and has two entry ways. It can be reached from Jadgalpur by road via Sargipal, Bodal, Murma and Netanar. Alternatively, it can be reached through the main entrance located on NH 221 that connects Jagdalpur to Vijayawada.

Mandawa Waterfall

Mandawa waterfalls are also located near Jagdalpur. At these falls water steps down from boulders and stones from a small height. Tourists may enjoy getting drenched while sitting on the watery steps. It is located at Mandawa, near village Dodrepal, 20 kms from Jagdalpur and can be reached by hiring a private vehicle. These are also called Mungabahar waterfalls, named after the stream Mungabahar. The water of the stream collected at the reservoir below the waterfalls zig-zags through rocks, sometimes discreetly, to meet the Kanger river and forms Tirathgarh and Kangerdhara waterfalls.

Mandra Waterfall

Chitradhara Waterfall

Tamda Waterfall

Charre-Marre Waterfall

Charre-Marre Waterfalls are located in Kanker district, in the southern part of Chhattisgarh. These waterfalls are 12 kms from Antagarh, near Kanker. Charre-Marre waterfalls originated from Jogidhara river, it is also called Antagarh river or Kutri nadi by local people. Driving up the Matla valley to reach these falls is a great fun, for the sharp U and V shaped turns along the way. It also gives a great view of the tree filled slopes and the crescent shaped valley. Rest houses, hotels and other facilities for tourists are available at Kanker. Antagarh is about 45 kms from Kanker and is connected by road.

Koriya Waterfall

Koriya waterfalls is one of the mystical and beautiful waterfalls of Chhattisgarh. This enchanting tourist location is at Tarra Village, near Baikunthpur. The beauty of Koriya waterfalls is magical, as the place is totally serene, untouched by the ugliness of modern cities and is mostly inhabited by tribes. Visitors get a close view of nature and the exotic tribal traditions simultaneously. Though the waterfalls are just 50 feet in height and 10 feet in width, yet there is a magical and soothing charm to them that attracts every onlooker.

Amrit Dhara Waterfall

Amrith Dhara waterfalls is one of the natural and beautiful cascades that starts from the Hasdo River in Koriya District, Chhattisgarh. The waterfall engulfed by thick and dense forests provide the perfect picturesque location to shutterbugs. Ideal time to visit is during the monsoons to capture the hustling waters rushing to land in the pool. This waterfall doesn’t dry up even during summer, so tourists can visit the place at any time of the year. Like Koriya waterfalls, Amrith Dhara is a small waterfall with a height of 90 feet and width of 10-15 feet. A Lord Shiva’s temple near the falls adds a mystic charm to the place. An annual fair during the Mahashivarathri festive season was being organized as a custom by Ramanuj Pratap Singh Judeo since 1936.

Ghatarani Waterfall

These furiously fast waterfalls are located at about 25 kms from Jatmai village near Bhilai. It is not advisable to plunge into the pool or attempt to climb any boulders at the fall when the currents are heavy. A small bridge over a narrow part of the fall gives you a wonderful view and also takes you to an ancient Jatmai temple at the other side. Travelers before visiting can enquire about the climate of the place before paying a visit. During heavy monsoons, it might not be possible to view the falls as the bridge might be submerged and the flow might be too strong.

Hazra/Hajra Fall

These waterfalls are located at Dongargarh, about 80 kms from Bhilai. Hazra waterfalls are near Salekasa, at about 1 km from Darekasa railway station. These waterfalls are famous and are well-connected because of their proximity to railway station. The train journey through tunnels, crossing over bridges connecting hills, shows you the best of the lush green valleys.

Siya Devi Waterfall

These waterfalls are named after Goddess Sita, also called SiyaDevi. Lord Rama, along with his brother Laxman and wife Sita, is believed to have visited this place and lived here for some time when he was in exile. A temple of Rama, Sita, and Laxmana is also present near the falls. These falls are located at about 20 kms from Balod; tourists may take a car from Balod. Both roadways and railways connect Balod to other cities of Chhattisgarh like Durg, Raipur.
