Chhattisgarh is a state located in central part of India. One of the fastest-developing states in India. Chhattisgarh is a great source of electricity and steel for the country. Geographically, it is the 10th largest state in India spreading over an area of 135,190 km2 (52,200 sq mi). Chhattisgarh is the 16th most-populated state of the country with a population of 25.5 million (as per census 2011). Earlier, Chhattisgarh was a part of Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Later, a separate state of Chhattisgarh was formed on 1st November, 2000 by carving out 16 Chhattisgarhi-speaking southeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh and Raipur became its state capital. Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha and Chhattisgarh High Court also came into existence on 1st November, 2000 with the formation of new Chhattisgarh state. Chhattisgarh is bounded by Odisha in the east, by Jharkhand in the northeast, by Uttar Pradesh in the north, by Madhya Pradesh in the northwest, by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the south and by Maharashtra in the southwest. At present, this state comprises 27 districts.

The government and administration in Chhattisgarh is controlled on the same lines as in other states of the country. The state follows a unicameral system of government i.e. it has only one house – the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha). The Vidhan Sabha consists of 91 members. Chhattisgarh has 11 seats in the Lok Sabha – the lower house of Parliament and 5 seats in Rajya Sabha – the upper house of Parliament . Like all other states of India, the head of the state is the Governor, appointed by the President of India. His or her post is largely ceremonial. Administrative Structure in Chhattisgarh

At the time of formation, new state of Chhattisgarh had 16 districts. Later, two new districts namely Bijapur and Narayanpur were carved out on May 11, 2007. Thereafter, nine new districts viz. Bemetara, Sukma, Baloda Bazar, Kondagaon, Surajpur, Mungeli, Balod, Gariaband, and Balrampur were also carved out of the existing districts on Jan 1, 2012. Present state of Chhattisgarh has 27 administrative districts. Chhattisgarh has been divided into five divisions namely Bastar, Durg, Raipur, Bijapur and Surjuga for administrative purposes. Each of these divisions comprise of certain districts of the state to ensure proper administration. These districts also consist of sub divisions and headquarters for administrative purpose. Legislature in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh state has a unicameral legislature and has Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha (Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly). The seat of the Vidhan Sabha is located at Raipur, the capital city of the state. Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha comprises total 91 Members of Legislative Assembly, out of which 90 members are directly elected from single-seat constituencies and rest one is nominated from the Anglo-Indian community. Term period of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha is 5 years, unless sooner dissolved. Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha has three sessions viz. Budget, Monsoon and Winter. The first session of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha was held at Jashpur hall of Rajkumar College located in Raipur. Later, Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly was shifted to the newly constructed building of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha Bhawan at Vidhan Nagar situated on Raipur-Baloda Bazar Road. Shri Gaurishankar Agrawal is the present Hon'ble Speaker of Chhattisagrh Vidhan Sabha.

Judiciary in Chhattisgarh is headed by Chief Justice as in other states of the country. Chhattisgarh High Court adjudicates over all the judicial matters relating to the state of Chhattisgarh. High Court of Chhattisgarh was established at Bilaspur on 1st November, 2000 with the creation of Chhattisgarh state. High Court of Chhattisgarh located at Bilaspur is the 19th High Court of India. Justice R. S. Garg was the first acting Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Navin Sinha is the acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. Apart from high court, there are many district and session courts also present with jurisdiction over judicial matters of that particular region.
